Yes, You can apply for the post and eligible for the sales tax officer. Now Sales Tax Officer is called Excise & Taxation Officer (ETO) because now VAT applicable in all over India from the year 2005.
But one thing remember that all government basic requirement along-with qualification is Computer Diploma Min 6 months and english fluency. So kept all the certificates and experience with you in English and computer.

In my view You should join the courses for programing language of C, C C# and visual studio....Its huge demand. But after completed the course you should also join 6 months industrial training. it will give you a good job as well as you can become a freelancer in programming.

This exam is conducted in three satges- tier 1 , tier 2 and Interview
Next exam for the Tier 1 will be held on 14th and 21st April 2013
Notification will come out on 19th January 2013
So, start Preparing for this exam.

To become a Sales Tax Officer you should appear for the Public Service Commission examination of the respective States for recruitment of officers in various Govt. Depts such as Administrative , Finance, Forest. Police dept. etc.
The eligible candidate should be graduate from any stream within the age of 21 to 30 years of age in order to apply for the exam conducted by PSC. The selection of candidate is through written exam followed by Personal Interview and according to the merit list the candidate are selected for Officers in various Dept. of a State.

Eligibility:-
U must be Indian citizen.
Age:-
U must be between 18 to 27 yrs as per the July 1 of examination year.
The age limit for other backward class (OBC) IS 18 TO 30 YRS.
Upper age limit for SC/ST is relaxed by 5 yrs making it 18 to 32 yrs.
Qualification:
You must have graduation degree in any stream completed from a recognised college.
Exam Patter:
There are two stages of Income Tax Officer Exam:
1) Preliminary Exam
2) Main Examination
Once you have passed both the stages, you would be called for an interview after which you will be given the job.
