Topics to prepare for IAS without wasting time?

I am a software engineer but it has been my dream to be an IAS.I am currently working and want to start my preparation for the exam though I'm not sure when I'll be giving it. The syllabus for IAS is changing constantly,so can anyone suggest what topics I should start preparing for so that even if there is a change later on I'll not have wasted my time.

The IAS exam comprises of two papers.

    Paper-1 -
    current affairs
    Indian geography
    Indian History
    Political science
    General science
    Economics
    Indian government and constitution

    Paper-2 -
    English
    reasoning
    numerical ability
    communication skills
    decision making and problem solving

Re: Topics to prepare for IAS without wasting time?

First i would like to tell you about the eligibilty criteria Of IAS exams.
Min educational qualifications is graduation pass
    Min age is 21 years
    Max age is 30 years
OBC gets 3 years age relaxation and SC/ST gets 5 years age relaxation.

Number of attempts is 4 for general candidates and 7 for OBC candidates.

IAS exams is held in 3 stages-Prelims, Mains and Interview

In Prelims which is now held as per the new pattern consists of 2 papers
    Paper 1- General studies
Paper 2- General mental ability, english, comprehension, reasoning etc

Both the papers are of 200 marks and time given is 120 minutes.

Now if you belong to general category than max age is 30 years to apply, so you should start preparing for the exams and give a shot.
You will only have 4 attempts.

You should atleast buy paper 1 and paper 2 books and start preparing for prelims exams
also start reading one national daily especiallly hindu nespaper, read pioneer magazine and buy few competitive exams magazines.

IAS preparation requires atleast 6-7 hours daily.
so plan and than start preparing
