Although CAT has been made online, but the exam is organized at a specific centres
    in India.

In your case, I would suggest that you should start the preparation by dowloading books online
or purchasing the books required for preparation.

The registeration of CAT starts from Aug, which is done online. So you can do the registeration
online and then book your schedule.
For the exam you must come to India .

The books which you must buy are:
    - Quantitative Book by Arun Sharma
    - DI book by Arihant Publication
    - For English part, books by Arihant Publication is also good.

So start practicing from these books and there are many coaching institutes which
provide Online guidance as well as Online classroom programmes. Some of these are:

    - Career Launcher
    - TIME
    - IMS.

So you can register for these programs for online guidance and test Series.
I hope such guidance will help you in good preparation and achieve the target.

Please let me know in case you need any more help.
You can also mail your issues regarding registeration to the official mail id to CAT organizing institutes.

Re: How to prepare for CAT while working abroad?

Since, you are living abroad, it's suggested to start preparing at the earliest.
You must be knowing that the exam has gone online & there are two basic sections now, each of 70 minutes duration.

Section I : Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation
Section II : Verbal Ability & Reasoning

For mastering each of these sections one needs to clear off the basics first, then it's reliable to go on practicing higher level questions. The difficulty level of the paper depends on certain criteria & percentile is dependent on these factors. Now, if you have access to institutes material & other such resources you can get the right material, excellent for cracking CAT exam.

It is advised to search for like-minded students who are there, interested in giving CAT, this with not only help you to be consistent in preparation but also help you to get a boost in confidence levels. You can practice on online portals like pagalguy.com, total gadha, which have a brilliant aspirant base with alumini's from respected B-schools, ready to help future students.

Go for books, since you are an engineer, aptitude & reasoning would not pose a big problem, though one needs constant practice & brushing of skills with questions that rise in level for a better prep.

    BOOKS :
Aptitude: Objective Mathematics for CAT , by Arun Sharma is an excellent book for comprehensive basics building.
Verbal Ability: Try & improve your reading speed, go through at least 1 online newspaper or magazine, specially news related to economics, phycology, philosphy. Try reading good novels from well known writer, with a tinge of philosophy in them. Publishers, like Tata Mc Graw Hill, Arihant are best for Verbal prep.

Reasoning & Data Interpretation : By Arun Sharma, one of the best book available.

These books are only for building an eye for types of different questions that might come your way in the exam. After going through these you should attempt mock tests, similar to the CAT pattern, so as to get a feel of your strengths & weekness. ENroll yourself in a good test series by institutes like TIME, Career Launcher , IMS, etc. These are the most trustworthy & have a large number of students enrolled in their programs.
This would help you to detect your weakness, side by side improve upon those, built speed & accuracy. One of the most important factors for success in CAT.
Constant prep will definitely help you achieve this goal.
